| Kookaburra Bird is native to Australia. Having a distinctive laughing song the kookaburra makes its crazy loud laughter when roosting in trees and at dawn and dusk. Largest of the kingfisher bird family but rarly eats fish, it stands around 18" inches with a stout frame the kookabuura has a long black sharp edged bill which is used to prey on snakes, lizards, and baby birds. Kookaburras have brown wings and cheek feathers, the breast is creamy in colour and bird has a strong dark stripe through the eyes. Nesting in a tree hole they usually lay 2 to 4 eggs, often other family members help rear the young. The kookaburra bird can live to an age of 20 years. Aboriginal legend has it kookaburra's laugh is a message to the sky spirits to light the great fire, the morning sun and to put it out at night. |
