Leopard Mammal belonging to the cat family, seen throughout Africa and Asia. It is also called the panther or pard. The fur is thick with a yellow, rusty, or gray, patterned with black rosettes which differ from those of the jaguar in that there is no central spot.
Black leopards are not a separate species; they often occur in a litter of normal color. The male Indian leopard may reach a total length of nearly seven a half feet. They hunt their prey in trees and along the ground, they feed on monkeys and other mammals as well as on birds and reptiles. At high altitudes in Tibet and the Himalayas is found the ounce or snow leopard. |
