Like the antelope the horns have a single fork; inside the horn is a bony core , with a bony covering ,and unlike the antelope the covering is shed annually . Their coloring along the back is reddish brown and white underparts and neck bands, with a dark muzzle. When in danger the hairs of the white rump patch raise sending out a signal to other pronghorns, and also secretions of a scent gland warn also. At one time pronghorns were numerous in the western United States and were doomed for extinction , but now have protection in national forests and parks . |
