Wapiti Member belonging to the deer family, (genus cervus ) they are closely related to the Red deer in the old world .

In America it is often misscalled the Elk . Once abundant across America they were slaughtered to for their food, and leather, and sport for its canine teeth (used as charms) among the form surviving under protection is the Rocky Mountain wapiti and the Roosevelt or Olympic elk or wapiti . In Asia several species are threatened with extinction .
