Beaver recovery to present day 
Naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton estimated there were 60 million beavers at the time settlers came to north america. This could have been a conservative number and the beaver population may have been much larger. The need for the beaver pelt for clothing in Europe created the reason to explore and settle north america from coast to coast. In a hundred years the beaver was almost wiped out through continual hunting. Reintroducing the beaver back to many places it was wiped out, beavers being so mobile and fertile populations have exploded and the beaver made a great recovery. Today the beaver is abundant in Europe and north america and is back in almost all of its old habitats, numbering in the millions. |
